York Health Foundation's Kids First Campaign provides the necessary medical services to children from families with no health insurance. Contributions benefit local, uninsured children through programs such as the HealthConnect Van, Healthy Community Pharmacy, Community Health Worker Outreach Program, Hoodner Dental Clinic, York Hospital Community Health Center, and the Medical Home Fund.
"The need is extensive out there," Joy Keller-Brown emphasizes. "It's surprising how many people work full-time jobs and don't have health insurance - it's not just the very poor." Joy, a Team Captain for the Campaign, is joined by co-workers Jeff Brown, Bonnie Bradfield, and Michelle Rhubright. More than 200 business and community leaders volunteer their time for the project.
According to Campaign information, there are more than 5,000 uninsured children in York County that qualify for assistance from the Kids First program. Statistics show that these children are less likely to receive will-child care and immunizations at crucial times in their development. Ultimately, they may develop more chronic diseases, may have difficulty in obtaining prescription medications, and are at greater risk of developing behavioral problems and learning disabilities.
York Health Foundation is a community-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of the local community by generating charitable contributions for the York-based entities of Wellspan Health. For more information, or to donate to the campaign, readers may visit the Campaign website or email dhelwig@wellspan.org for more information.
